Dry, gritty eyes at night

When I have my lenses in all night my eyes get very dry and gritty. Is there anything I can do to stop this?

Optician’s answer

Thank you for your question – I’m sorry to hear about the discomfort you are experiencing.

Even if your contact lenses are designed by their manufacturer to be worn overnight, it is important that your Optician has advised you can do so.

The health of your cornea is a major factor in whether you are suitable to wear contact lenses overnight. This is something that your Optician will assess when you are fitted with your contact lenses and at your regular checkups.

It is also important to bear in mind that your eyes will change over time. Contact lenses that you could once sleep in comfortably may start to cause irritation. This can be due to natural changes, such as reduced tear production or increased sensitivity.

The discomfort you are experiencing may be relieved temporarily by comfort drops and taking your contact lenses out when you do not need to sleep in them. This will give your eyes a rest from lens wear.

If this issue continues it may affect the performance of the contact lens and potentially reduce the level of vision you experience when wearing them. I would recommend visiting your optician, who will be able to assess your eyes. They may look at refitting you with a contact lens that can reduce the discomfort you are experiencing.

As a Lenstore customer, you are entitled to free eye tests and contact lens checkups. I would recommend you book in as soon as possible to find a permanent solution for the issues you are experiencing.
