We’ve researched what colours people are most keen to try out using Google search data. We found that green is the most popular lens colour, with brown coming in a close second, despite it being one of the most common eye colours. Other popular choices include grey, blue and hazel, all of which are naturally had by less than 10% of the population.
But which one is right for you?
Well, as over 4 million people have been exploring Tiktok under the hashtag #colourpsychology, different colours have different meanings. The same theory can be applied to eye colours.
If you want to come across as mysterious and intriguing, pick up a pair of enchanting green contacts. Or, opt for a pair of brown contacts to show your kind and empathetic side.
Grey contacts will highlight your uniqueness, while blue eyes will help you channel confidence. Finally, if you’re looking for a combination of strength and sensitivity, the rare hazel colour is the choice for you.
Styling & pairing advice for your coloured contacts
So you can master the coloured contact trend, we’ve put together some tips, as well as advice from stylist Gabrielle Leare, to help you make the most of your new eye colour.
From which eyeshadows to use to what colour palettes to include in your wardrobe, discover how to style your coloured lenses.
Green
Our most popular contact colour, green contact lenses look fantastic on redheads, brunettes and blondes and are a perfect choice if you want to make a statement.
Just 2% of the population have naturally green eyes, making it a gorgeous and unique shade to try.
For a truly mesmerising effect on those around you, go monochromatic and match your outfit to your lenses. Or, for a bolder look, clash with colours like red, pink, or orange to bring out the contacts’ green tones.
Gabrielle says:
“Emerald eyes are literally spellbinding, so wearing emerald will make the effect more pronounced. Or choose a coral colour for complementary effects.”
If you have a special occasion planned, Gabrielle suggests pairing your green lenses with a blue jersey dress, heels and a gold embellished clutch bag for a showstopping ensemble.
Grey
Another one of the rarest naturally occurring eye colours, grey eyes are both mysterious and intriguing at once. These cool and glassy-coloured contacts will lend a sense of elegance to your everyday look and when paired with the right outfit, can make your eyes pop.
Cool grey shades are known to have a calming effect, making those around you feel relaxed and reassured. To enhance this effect, team your grey contact lenses with clothes and accessories in neutral shades like taupe. Alternatively, pair it with blue and silver for a chic evening look.
Gabrielle says:
“Avalon blue will make grey eyes jump across the room, while fuchsia pink will offset the grey and make them shine.”
To stand out from the crowd, make like Gabrielle suggests and try a bright pink statement piece to liven up your wardrobe and bring out the grey of the lenses.
Blue
Blue is one of the most popular eye colours in the UK, with around 34% of people finding blue eyes the most attractive, making it the perfect contact choice for a confidence boost.
From a colour psychology perspective, blue is also said to align with the mind and is associated with thoughtfulness and creativity.
Gabrielle says:
“This is a gorgeous colour for eyes – a lovely bright, light blue. Pairing it with a wonderful bright blue jumper will make the colour pop.”
Combine your blue contact lenses with a stunning knit in cobalt blue or with a pop of pink – Gabrielle guarantees it’ll be a hit. Additionally, orange and bronze eyeshadows will contrast your blue eyes and make them stand out even more.
Brown
Brown may be the most common eye colour, but it is also the most versatile.
From warm purple and plum tones to cool greens and blues, there are many outfit combinations that you can create to flatter and accentuate brown contacts.
Gabrielle says:
“When people have dark eyes it is hard to make them pop. Brown eyes look amazing with orange, and turquoise. white and claret.”
Whether you choose a bold monochromatic ensemble or something brighter, wearing colour will give your brown contact lenses a warm and inviting effect.
Hazel
Treading the line between green and brown, hazel lenses are the best of both worlds. Around 5% of the world’s population has hazel eyes, so choosing this colour will help you create a unique and interesting look.
As well as classic neutrals, hazel contact lenses pair great with warm colours like orange, lavender and burgundy. Top it off with some purple eyeshadow to bring the look together.
Gabrielle says:
“Green eyes work beautifully with red clothes. As opposites on the colour wheel, the red brings out the green.”
So, wearing something red will bring out the green hues in the contacts and ensure heads turn your way as you enter a room.
